Are roaches normal for a housE on an island?

I grew up in bermuda and my mother would always say it was normal... but I didn't think so. My house is pretty old and disgusting... I would wake up in the middle of the night with roach on me or kid 3 in one night. Is there some connection with roaches in houses on islands or was the house just a disgusting old mess?
