Why does crabgrass grow so well where regular grasses will not grow at all?

I have a spot in my yard that is extremely sandy. Of course bermuda, fescue, and blue grass will hardly grow there at all, but crabgrass thrives. Why is that? Does crabgrass store moisture? How does it grow where other grasses will not grow?
